Why Do We Clean Our House During Diwali?
The time has come for the festival of lights, joy, and celebrations. Yes, Diwali will soon arrive. Every year, the festival of the diyas is filled with excitement for us because of its unique customs and traditions that bring the entire family together to spread joy. Cleaning our home and maintaining the paint and furniture as needed is one of these usual rituals. Diwali symbolizes illuminating one's inner self. Diwali is a time for new beginnings and cleaning. It's the season of lights and presents. Now is the moment to enjoy sweets and let go of the hurt and resentment of the past. Why is it important to clean your house during Diwali?
Hindus begin their house cleaning several days before Diwali. Yes, we need to do some daily physical and mental cleaning. The cleanliness of our environment is also crucial. Diwali cleaning is unique and done to a higher standard. The house, shop, or other establishment has been thoroughly cleaned. Not just the surface has been cleaned. One time when individuals visit each other's homes is Diwali. For guests, many also prepare a lot of Diwali sweet foods and snack meals. Having a spotless home to welcome visitors is regarded as a positive symbol. We all favour visiting neatly maintained locations over unkempt or unsanitary ones.
Welcoming Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth
Many of us are aware of the widely held view that Goddess Lakshmi will grant wealth and fortune to a tidy and tastefully adorned home. So, around this time, it is customary in India to clean the house, decorate it with lights and flowers, and do a special Lakshmi puja.
Welcoming Guests such as Athithi to participate in the Diwali celebration
On the day of Naraka Chaturdashi, it is customary in some areas of Karnataka for people to perform Aarati at one other's homes to commemorate how the people of Dwaraka welcomed Krishna. A tidy and clean home assures your guests will feel welcome throughout the Diwali celebration. Athithi Devo Bhava, which translates to "treat guests as God," has a ceremonial significance and is a well-known Sanskrit proverb.
Diwali as a New Year
The start of a new year is observed the day after Diwali, which is also regarded as the final day of "The King Vikram" calendar. People will eventually clean their homes to greet the New Year and prepare them for the Diwali festival. Thus, cleaning our homes becomes necessary for us as a ritual and for sanitary reasons. Here are a few short suggestions for cleaning your house for Diwali.
- Dispose of unwanted and unused materials from home. They only occupy more space and make the area look messy.
- Give away your old clothes to the poor or needy to make more space in your wardrobe for new clothes that you buy for the festival.
- Give special attention to unnoticed corners. Usually, more dust will be accumulated there. Wipe or use the vacuum cleaner to clean the area.
- If you have plans to paint your home for Diwali then ensure to cover your furniture and home appliances to avoid paint stains on them.
- Basic cleaning is required from mopping, floor scrubbing, and bathroom cleaning to make your home space free from dust.
After finishing this, you should replace the drapes, pillows, and sofa coverings in your rooms and living space. Additionally, store insect repellents in the corners of the room, use air fresheners, and scented alcohol to maintain the fresh scent for a longer time. You may now use diyas and lights to decorate your home to give it a festive aspect for Diwali. Everything that was thrown into the corners, beneath the bed and cabinets has been taken out and donated. We only keep those who are absolutely necessary to us. Our minds should also be cleaned up like the rest of our bodies. All resentment, frustration, and animosity must be eliminated. Every crevice of the mind has to be cleaned.
Divinity won't manifest if there is even the slightest bit of dirt inside. Goddess Lakshmi won't show up if you are mired in the past or a captive of unfavourable emotions. It is important to erase any bad stains from both the people living there and the house itself. Only when we are pure, simple, and filled with love can we celebrate Diwali in its truest sense. We may best purify our minds by thinking only about positive things. Every positive thought cleans up the messes left by negative ones. Goddess Lakshmi manifests when there is no room in our minds for negative thoughts. We, therefore, need to clean our brains of all types of bad stains in addition to cleaning our dwellings.
