Bhagwan Singh, Shimoga Divisional Manager of India Food Corporation said that the central government has taken a decision to provide nutrition security along with food security and has taken steps to distribute fortified rice under the public ration system. He was addressing a press conference at the Food Corporation of India (FCI) divisional office in Gadikoppa today to inform about the distribution of fortified rice under the public ration system. Central government is implementing PMGKY scheme to distribute free rations to the weaker sections with the aim that no one should be deprived of food during Covid.

Realizing that most of the country is undernourished, the government has decided to provide fortified rice in the ration system and mid-day meal. This will benefit everyone including women and children. At present, enriched rice is being supplied in the notified districts which have the highest nutrient deficiency and by 2024, it will be supplied across the country, he said.

In the first phase in the state, Shimoga, Davangere and Uttara Kannada districts have been selected under the pilot program and enriched rice is being distributed under the public ration system from May. The central government’s main aim is to ensure the minimum support price for the farmers, stabilize the prices in the open market, provide food grains to the weaker sections of the society and achieve food security regardless of any emergency situation in the country.

In this regard, now under the pilot program enriched rice is being distributed, he said. Divisional Office Quality Control Manager Sivakumar said that 70 percent of the people in our country are suffering from nutrient deficiency. To overcome this, the government has decided to provide fortified rice, which is mostly used by the people as their main food.
